How to read the numbers on this page

The tiles above are quick snapshots. Here's what the ones you can see mean:

  • Last price — the most recent trading price we have, refreshed periodically. It's a snapshot, not a real-time ticker. Learn how stock prices work.
  • Market cap — price multiplied by total shares outstanding, i.e. what the market thinks the whole company is worth. Bigger means bigger, not automatically better.
  • P/E ratio — price divided by earnings per share: a quick "how expensive is the stock" gauge. Banks usually have lower P/Es than tech stocks because their earnings growth is steadier. P/E explained for beginners.
  • Dividend yield — the annual dividend per share divided by the price, shown as a percentage. It's the income component of owning the stock — useful if you invest for income, though dividends can change or be cut. Dividend yield 101.
  • Volume — how many shares changed hands in the latest session. A jump in volume often marks a busy news day. Understanding trading volume.

What makes banks different

Banks make money differently from product companies like Apple: their raw material is borrowed money. Four concepts appear in every bank's reports:

  • Net interest income & net interest margin (NIM) — a bank pays interest on deposits and lends that money out at a higher rate. The difference is net interest income; as a percentage of its interest-earning assets it's the net interest margin. A wider spread means the lending side earns more.
  • Credit provisions — money a bank sets aside for loans that may never be repaid. Higher provisions reduce reported profit and usually signal the bank expects weaker loan performance.
  • CET1 capital ratio — core equity (mostly common shares and retained earnings) divided by risk-weighted assets. It's the loss-absorbing cushion a bank holds, and regulators require a minimum. Higher means a safer balance sheet.
  • Efficiency ratio — operating expenses divided by revenue. Lower is better: the bank spends less to generate each dollar of income.

Beginner questions

Why is JPM's P/E lower than a tech stock like Apple's?

Growth expectations. Investors pay more for each $1 of today's earnings when they expect earnings to grow fast, as with tech companies. Banks tend to grow more slowly and steadily, so their P/E ratios are typically lower. A low P/E isn't automatically a bargain — it usually means the market expects steadier, slower growth.

What does the dividend yield tell me?

It shows the annual dividend as a percentage of the price you pay for a share — the income component of owning the stock. If you invest for income it matters a lot; if you invest for growth it matters less. The yield moves whenever the dividend or the price changes.
